Magnificent Murals
Travel Inspiration
Art is all around us if we know where to look. In the Chicago Southland, there’s a plethora of indoor and outdoor art for viewing that includes interpretive murals created by talented artists.
Lincoln Highway Murals
The Illinois Lincoln Highway, America's First Coast-to-Coast road, was dedicated in 1913 and runs about 25 miles through the Chicago Southland from Lynwood in the east to Frankfort in the west. Throughout this section of the Lincoln Highway, a series of seven murals was completed in 2012 featuring local and national Lincoln Highway history.
You’ll find them in:
- Chicago Heights
- Frankfort
- Lynwood
- Matteson
- Park Forest
- Sauk Village
- University Park
Three interpretive gazebos are also found on the Lincoln Highway in the Chicago Southland.
Read more about the murals on the Lincoln Highway Mural Trail page.
Richard Haas Murals
Homewood has the largest collection of Richard Haas murals in the world. Specializing in large, illusion murals, Haas first started painting murals in Homewood in the 1980s. You’ll now find more than a dozen completed murals on the sides of buildings in the community. A mural of a 1950s diner is located on the south-facing wall of the Lily Pad, a greenhouse mural can be seen on the side of the Homewood Florist building and a service station is painted on the side of Pete’s Auto Service. Spend an afternoon making your way around Homewood to see them all or view the map online.
Other Outdoor Art
And don’t miss additional outdoor masterpieces at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park in University Park, the Flossmoor Sculpture Gardens in Flossmoor or the Sculpture Collection in Palos Heights. Read more about them on the Public Art page.
