Agri-Tourism Tour - Fulcrum Farms
Come visit Fulcrum Farms located on 60 acres in rural Manhattan, IL and learn direct from the owner about his farming principals and business practices.
Fulcrum Farms raises chickens, ducks and quail in the most humane and eco friendly way possible. They sell their eggs to local restaurants and individuals. Following an ethics based contrarian business principal, Fulcrum Farms does not believe in normal advertising and instead runs their business by word of mouth recommendation which always gets the best quality customers. They are a diversified, grass-based, beyond organic, direct marketing farm. They will be expanding shortly with pigs and cows.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Fulcrum’s environmentally friendly farm compared to one that doesn’t care about the environment is how it handles waste stream. In Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s), including large processing plants, the waste stream overpowers the surrounding ecosystem, which is why so many farms smell so bad. Often feedlots, hog factories, and chicken houses generate 10 times the waste that can be ecologically metabolized on the land where the CAFO is located. Fulcrum Farms has carefully defined the ecological carrying capacity and refuse to haul manure or waste anywhere. This forces them to decentralize, stay divested across the landscape, and remain aesthetically and aromatically attractive.
Fulcrum Farms believes in sharing their practices and educating those who are interested so anyone 21 years and older is welcome to see what they do. They share their techniques, models, everything. Thousands of farms now follow the same methods and practices. Every business which copies these practices and business model will heal another few acres. A business devoted to healing tends to preserve its customer base and keep it’s neighbors happy.
At the end of the tour, refreshments will be served in Fulcrum’s impressive, comfortable and upscale barn. Tour time estimated at 2-2.5 hours. Optional classes on “How to raise chickens in the suburbs” can also be added into this tour.
